Jörg Schmeisser (b. 1942) is a German born, Canberra-based artist, who works mainly in drawing and print (etching). He studied in Germany and Japan, taught then in Hamburg and was for 20 years Head of Printmaking at the Canberra School of Art (now ANU). Recently he returned from 6 years’ teaching at the Kyoto City University of Arts. Work as draftsman for archaeologists in the 70ies – recording and interpreting- still has an echo in more recent work that resulted from travels to places as far apart as Yirrkala and Frecinet, Angkor and Venice, Ladakh and Antarctica.

Making full use of the particular qualities of the medium printmaking ( the multiple originals) he has had more than 200 solo exhibitions worldwide. His work is held in private and regional collections as well as major collections such as Staatliche Sammlungen Dresden , the National Gallery of America, British Museum and the National Gallery of Australia.
