Matt Dabrowski and the Many Hands of Glamour
vortex book, 2007
![]()
Outside our unanimous agreement about the perceived formal structure of our passage of experience, everything happens at once. The vortex books allude to the mechanics of the chronological and spatial framework that conjoin in the idea of ‘reality’. The hurricane, winding its way through maps of space, is the quantum physicians’ idea of the shape of time. The book is a material symbolic reminder that the only constants in our existential embrace are change, potential and choice. 10 x UBD street directories with void. 5,000 pp. 29 x 22 x 25 cm. On-going project. $990

Sorour Fattahi
Storyteller, 2005
![]()
The artist is from Iran. After moving to Brisbane in 2003, she has been focusing on the notion of ‘Displacement and Identity’ in her work. She tries to reveal the experience of dislocation and its inevitable outcomes: suspension, gap, contrast, and nostalgia; the suspension of living in-between different cultures, the gap of belonging to the surrounding community, the contrast of Self and Others, and the nostalgia for tradition in the modern world. This book contains stories from her homeland and the tales from faraway lands. These stories mingle the past with the present, and merge the two worlds she is in-between. Monoprint with drawing and text. 24 pp. 20.5 x 15 x 15 cm. Unique. $375

Nathalie Hartog-Gautier, Penelope Lee
Ex-Ile, 2007
![]()
This book tells the story of two islands; Daniel Maximin’s ex-isle, Guadeloupe, and the island of Nathalie Hartog-Gautier and Penelope Lee, Australia.
Words need paper in order to be written, and it is important to begin this process by creating each leaf of paper on which the story is narrated. Thus the choice of cotton as the fibre used to make handmade paper is a reminder of history, of slavery and of Daniel Maximin’s ancestors but also each page, during its formation, is itself an island drawn from the water. This ‘island’ is then couched into a page on which the texts and images will be born.
Each title is a watermark; traces left on the paper when the water has drained away, like the marks of boat leaving a wake behind her, a thread leading to the story.
The artworks complementing the text move backwards and forwards between two countries acting like the negative of a film of which the text is a developer; metaphors for marks left by time on the surface of an ancient volcano, of memories and journeys that symbolise of Nathalie’s migration to Australia.
Another narrative thread is revealed in Penelope’s binding; one where stitches join words and images, the past and the present, the beginning and the end, bound between suitcase covers, of an ex-isled memory.

Remembrancers, 2007
Historically the word, Remembrancers, referred to debt collectors, reminding people of things they would rather forget. During Howard’s term as Prime Minister, the artist believes there have been certain issues that challenged ideas on what it is to be Australian. History is integral in producing a sense of Australian-ness and tensions arise between one nationalist idea on identity and history as a ‘fragmented stew’ of multi-narratives, memories and experiences that is more inclusive of a multi-diverse Australian society. In this work, the artist has utilised combinations of iconic shapes, drawings, photographic imagery and text to explore some of these ideas, tensions and representations during Howard’s historical term. Bound by Fred Pohlmann. Signed and dated. 10 etchings plus 2 pages and end pages. 15.5 x 52 x 1.5 cm. Self-published in an edition of 5 + 1AP. $1850

Still Stillness, 2007
![]()
The impression of watching the shift between day and night, that ephemeral state when light, time and movement seem to be both momentarily suspended and continuous, was the starting point for this book. The artwork presentation suggests an interior view of the exterior world through the implied movement of film frames and the still photographic images of glass plate negatives. Entitled ‘Still Stillness’ the publication presents a series of photographic collages and a text extract from ‘Still’ by Samuel Beckett. 10 Asian-fold pages of digital printing on fabric plus hardcover with frosted acrylic cover boards, cotton-thread stitching, brass post binding. even in 1840, 2007
The search for knowledge and answers has been driven by the question ‘why’ for centuries. The justification for war has often been based on attempts to answer ‘why’. Books have been the carrier of much information but not always the answers. This work considers the many ways the question ‘why’ is asked, the minimalism of modern questioning, and the noticeable lack of answers. But, as in contemporary society, at least the cover feels good. Hand-stamped, drawn, torn, French paper, using hand carved wood block stamp from 1840 London. Housed in velvet pocket. Approx. 24 x 18 cm. Unique. $200
