Lessons in History Vol. II – Democracy

Due to the inundation of the gallery in the January floods, this exhibition has been postponed until December 2011 or early 2012.

‘… in Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. Graham Greene’s character expresses contempt for democracy in stark contrast to our sense of ‘democracy’ as a ‘feel-good’ idea. With missionary zeal, we have undertaken wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, in part to bring a western ‘democratic system’ to the citizens of these countries.
But is the ‘democracy’ we wish to impose already broken? Will the cuckoo clock be all that is left?

To submit an artist book for selection in Lessons in History Vol. II – Democracy, a 2011 exhibition of artists’ books on the subject of ‘Democracy’.

This is a project by the Centre for Fine Print Research, University of the West of England. Librarians have produced bookmarks in editions of 100 for visitors to venues to take. The aim of the project is to get more people to appreciate artists’ books and to make contact with the artists who produce them. Each bookmark is stamped with the website address, which leads to the archive on UWE’s website with the artist’s statement and email/website contact details, so that the public can contact them if they wish.

One bundle of bookmarks will be placed in the bookmarks box each month at each of the venues beginning on 25th September 2010 and ending February 2011. As grahame galleries + editions is closed from from 17th December 2010 until mid February 2011, our distribution will continue a little longer than at other venues.

Walking Home is my metaphorical return journey to Gippsland, the place of my childhood.

The images are drawn from the intersection of two narratives of Gippsland: the myth of Lohan Tuka, the white woman reputedly held captive by the Kurnai tribes in the 1840s and the story of my settler family’s arrival at the same time.

The prints operate as imaginary maps for my journey, maps which record the places where particular events from the narratives occurred or could have occurred. The places named in the titles suggest resting points on my way.

The works evoke the tracks and traces of people walking across places, through time.

Twelve A4 four sheets folded 15.0 x 10.5 cm, trimmed to 14.9 cm, so that the top and bottom are open but the foredge remains closed. On the first page of each of these twelve sections appears the work ‘notebook’. It is placed midway down the page and slightly to the right of centre. A small indentation is to the left of the text. These appear on 11 of the sections. On the last page is printed Ti Parks 1997. 14.9 x 10.5 cm. Signed and numbered AP.

12 4A sheets of Copy Right Extrawhite 80 gsm photocopy/laser paper.
Each sheet folded twice.  Bottom edges slit. Adapted Chinese binding using waxed line thread. Cover and title page with printed title in black: BB – HH –Single Tracks – Ti Parks – 1997. Seven pages of pencil drawings. Colophon as title page, signed and numbered in pencil.
Each drawing is a vertical ruled line from the top to the bottom of the page and 20-30 mm. from the fore-edge. 2 B pencil line drawn first. Then 2H pencil line drawn over the first line. Then line smudged or rubbed using ball of thumb with enough pressure to cause some frictional heat and enough times up and down the full length to spread the pigment and to blur the line. This result is realted to a drypoint line where the metal burr produces a blurred line when printed. Edition 10/10. 15 x 10.6 .5 cm. Signed and numbered.

Iain Turnbull died last year from cancer aged 43. His work will be featured in two Memorial Retrospectives. Proceeds from both exhibitions are being shared equally between the Mater Hospital’s Oncology programs and a Memorial Fund for an annual bursary in Iain’s memory at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, where he graduated with First Class Honours in 2004.

An exhibition of Turnbull’s paintings, drawings and assemblages opens Sunday 29 August 6.30 pm – 8.30 pm at the Queensland College of Art Project Gallery.

At grahame galleries + editions an exhibition of forty-two etchings have been selected for the print exhibition, which opens on Sunday 29 August 3.30 pm – 5 pm.

an exhibition of etchings
17 July – 14 August 2010

Most of the etchings in this selection were done on journeys, from the re-supply voyage to Mawson in Antarctica – which for a few years remained the artist’s central theme – to etchings of his six years in Japan, where he taught at the same art school at which he studied 40 years ago. Studies of crab claws and shells and observations on a journey to Venice are other parts of this selection. The etchings were done in the studio and on the road; “a record and celebration of what moved me there and then, and an attempt to keep the memories alive before their contours blur and the colours fade.”

Clive Phillpot quotes Ruscha in his essay on the artist’s books in Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1990, “I consider my books to be strictly visual materials…I even perceived them as bits of sculpture, in a way. They were three-dimensional, they were thick. I even painted on the sides of my canvases for a few years to accentuate the idea that this was a three-dimensional thing. I would make a painting that said ‘Radio,’ for example, then paint the title on the side. In an odd way, it was lake a book, and so my paintings were book covers. in a way.” ‘Conversely, one might say that Ruscha’s books were like portable, miniature word paintings, especially since he would sometimes conceive their covers first.’ Phillpot in Engberg. vol. 2. p. 67.

There has been much written about the title of Ruscha’s 2^nd book. ‘Ruscha’s reference to apparently incongruous elements in his large paintings (a magazine, a newspaper, or a pencil, often painted actual size) indicate that the non sequitur of the glass of milk at the end of Various Small Fires was not so anomalous…The unusual number of blank pages in Various Small Fire is repeated and even exceeded in some of the later books.’ Phillpot in Engberg. vol. 2. p. 64.

This copy of Various Small Fires is from 2^nd edition. It is from the collection of Malcolm Enright.
It was given to Enright by Brett Whiteley in 1974. It sat in Whitley’s studio open at the ‘7^th fire’ and now naturally falls open here. The two pages are paint stained and there are other marks made by Whiteley.
‘Around 1974 I spent many weekends in Sydney, I stayed in Challis Avenue, right around the corner from Macleay Street (Potts Point), where the Yellow House was just going-off during that period. I had Sunday lunch at some place off Oxford Street (down towards Riley Street) with a large group of people after a visit to Brett’s studio close by. He spent most of the time in the restaurant toilet I remember. He had given me Various Small Fires earlier in the day after we shared stories of NYC and especially the Chelsea Hotel, where we had both stayed. You can still see his huge skyline 3D work in their foyer, today.
He was a gracious guy, just so energetic but I guess that was the stuff talking.’ Mal Enright
The book was stolen from Enright’s extensive library by a ‘friend’. Mal adds,‘The friend was nicknamed ‘NZ Graham’. He was a clear light tripper. He ripped off a good part of my first library, early on – I did manage to buy back 4 or 5 important books from Mrs Lloyd. ‘Little Fires’ was fortunately one of them.’
It was found in Lloyds Bookshop in Brisbane and reclaimed by Enright.

In 1973 Ruscha mounted a camera with continuously-fed film on the back of a truck and made a panoramic image of the entire 12 mile length of Hollywood Boulevard, the same procedure he had used to make Every Building on the Sunset Strip in 1966. The Hollywood Boulevard photograph was never turned into an artist’s book, but Ruscha preserved the negatives and has now made new panoramic photos, in colour, of Hollywood Boulevard as it was in June, 2004. The vintage and contemporary panoramas have now been aligned side-by-side in this new publication, a project Ruscha calls, “a very democratic, unemotional look at the world.”
